Below are some friends I meet up with now and then. I have known quite a lot of people in my time, but very few of them you can call close friends.

Simon Drain
Accountant
A Hobbit and easily the "cutest" of my friends and packed with "Winnie the Pooh" stuff. An Accountant, but Simon would rather be known as a "Bean Counter". Hopes to set up his own web-hosting company and move to Brisbane, Australia to live.

Chris Green
Engineer
Once called Simon "a little Troll" for which Simon was not at all amused! Chris has a logical brain on him as well as a good sense of humour. Enjoys a good game of Squash, too.

Andrew Maples
Taxation Lecturer
One of my best friends. Married Debbie in 1998. Formerly worked in Tax at Price Waterhouse before obtaining a lecturing position at the University of Canterbury. Has a heart of gold.

Alistair Compton
Ph.D Student
Another good friend and problem solver. Currently doing his Ph.D in Mathematics at Glasgow University in Scotland. He is currently courting Ruth, and they have been going together for two years now.

Mahlina Dinh
Nursing Student
"A friend in need is a friend indeed" as the saying goes. Good, genuine, and honest people are rare these days and Mahlina is one of them. Very knowledgeable about life issues and a very profound person to communicate with. A good friend, very encouraging, extremely valuable, and supportive.

Bruce Donaldson
B.Com. Student
Bruce is a friend through chess. He is a former South Island Champion, and he was selected for the Canterbury State Team in the same year that I was selected. The only single male friend of mine who is not a virgin, has two illegitimate children, and drinks and smokes far too much.

John Chang
High School Teacher
John has been a good friend of mine since he was in my Form 6 class (1990) of Christchurch Boys' High School (CBHS). His family migrated to New Zealand from Taiwan. Has an excellent sense of humour, has a very caring heart, and is a good Badminton player.

Guy West and Jean
International Master
Guy is a good friend from Melbourne, Australia. He has an Internet business there. His girlfriend Jean also lives in Melbourne, Australia after having lived and been brought up in South Africa. They are in their mid-40's and I look forward to the day when they decide to tie the knot. :-)

Gary and Janine Bekker
International Arbiter

Gary and Janine are also friends from Melbourne, Australia. They have not long celebrated the birth of a daughter! Yahoo! :-)

They also have a son, Josh. Gary works in for a Government Department in the field of Information Technology. He is also Oceanic Zonal President for FIDE. Janine works as a nurse aid in elementary education. :-)

Quentin Johnson
Accountant
Nobody can forget Q! Quentin organised and ran tournaments when I was a teenager. He is happily married, and has been married for two years now. Yay!

Hilton Bennett
Energy Consultant
Hilton is NZCF Vice-President and a considerate, friendly bloke. Very easy to talk to. Happily married. :-)

Darren Hale
Factory Worker
Darren is a friend of Andrew Maples, and we keep in contact now and then. A "no frills" type person. His mother was President of the Embroiderer's Guild, who has commented very favourably on my design work and has recommended that I set up in that field if that is what I wanted to do.

Tom is a good friend from elementary, middle, and high school. He is now living in Broadway, MA, USA after marrying an American lady in 2002. Tom and Melina both met in Japan on a Japanese English Teaching programme.

Robert Campbell
